THE
VIRUS THREAT
In
an age when technology is so ubiquitous that it
is almost taken for granted, antivirus software
plays an increasingly important role in protecting
computer systems. Despite their innocent sounding
names (Loveletter, Klez, Prettypark, etc.), computer
viruses, trojan horses, worms, and other forms
of malicious programs wreak havoc and cause tremendous
losses
Time
lost and costs incurred to repair damage, restore
systems, and recover data
Loss
of employee confidence
Loss
of valuable information and communications
Loss
of productivity
Missed
critical deadlines
Damage
to customer confidence and loyalty
Bad
publicity and damage to your reputation
Loss
of revenue or market share
Regulatory
penalties
With
these malicious programs becoming more sophisticated
and easier to create, the risk to people and businesses
around the world is amplified. Estimates of the
damage caused each year by malicious computer programs
run as high as $55 billion. To protect themselves,
tens of millions of users rely on Grisoft and its
award-winning line of AVG Anti-Virus software.
THE
GRISOFT DIFFERENCE
For
more than a decade (the company was founded in
the Czech Republic in 1991), Grisoft has set itself
apart from other antivirus providers through solutions
that combine maximum protection with maximum performance.
Many antivirus products on the market today require
users to navigate a complicated interface and
consume large amounts of computer memory and other
resources. This can degrade system performance
and cause users to self-limit their use of virus
protection. So, instead of being safer from attacks,
they are actually more vulnerable. Grisoft offers
protection for a 2-year period unlike other
antivirus companies.
Through
an easy, intuitive interface, and by placing minimal
demands on system resources, Grisoft solutions maximize
protection – focusing on those areas most
vulnerable to attack and stopping viruses before
they can be saved to a PC. Grisoft solutions have
been awarded both the ICSA Labs Antivirus Product
Certification and the Virus Bulletin 100% logo,
which is awarded to antivirus products that detect
all “in the wild” viruses during comparative
tests.
PROTECTING
YOU ON MULTIPLE LEVELS
Grisoft
solutions are unique in their ability to protect
users on multiple levels. Malicious programs can
attack in many ways – through e-mail attachments,
via a backdoor into the network, on removable media
– and Grisoft solutions are ready for all
of them.
The
AVG Resident Shield (On-Access Scanner) protects
computers whenever their operating system is running
– working in the background to provide transparent
antivirus checking as files are opened, executed,
or copied/saved. If a virus is detected, the Resident
Shield denies the operation and ensures that the
virus is contained.
Grisoft
AVG Anti-Virus solutions work on all major operating
systems and platforms, including 64-bit Windows.
The Grisoft solutions also have specific plugins
for a wide range of individual e-mail clients (including
MS Outlook, Eudora, The Bat!) as well as any other
e-mail clients using the SMTP and POP3 protocols.
The AVG Email Scanner automatically checks all e-mails
(including attachments), isolating any detected
viruses and certifying that outgoing e-mails are
virus-free.
In
addition, all AVG Anti-Virus solutions are completely
customizable. Users can manually start tests at
any time, create their own test definitions, set
priority levels, and determine how their AVG solution
should react if a virus is found.
THE
AVG ANTI-VIRUS SCANNING ENGINE
The
sophisticated AVG Anti-Virus scanning engine is
at the heart of all AVG Anti-Virus solutions. Using
an extensive preprocessing procedure, the scanning
engine scans data for patterns of virus code, which
it disarms by rendering the code in its basic form.
Suspected
code undergoes additional analysis controlled by
the AVG Anti-Virus database – one of the largest
proprietary antivirus databases in the world. The
code is analyzed for similarities with known viruses.
(This form of generic detection is particularly
suitable for macro and script viruses.) Tests are
automatically run every day by default – or,
the application can be configured to create a customized
scanning schedule. Users can also check specific
areas at any time.
HEURISTIC
ANALYSIS
Next,
two levels of heuristic analysis are performed:
Static analysis locates programming code that is
typical for certain types of virus propagation,
while dynamic analysis uses a code emulator to evaluate
the behavior of a program or file. The heuristic
analysis is able to identify entirely new viruses
or worms – and keeps AVG Anti-Virus at the
forefront of antivirus protection.
When
viruses are detected, they are immediately moved
to the AVG Virus Vault, a secure repository for
infected files. Finally, Grisoft AVG solutions perform
an integrity check. Certain data associated with
each scanned file is stored in an internal integrity
database and used to heal infected files, potentially
restoring information that may have been lost during
infection.
TIMELY
VIRUS UPDATES
With
new viruses appearing all the time, the ability
to rapidly distribute updates to users around the
world is critical – and it’s a capability
where Grisoft excels. With AVG Anti-Virus, updates
are provided regularly as well as when new threats
arise. Using a network of tens of thousands of high-speed
servers around the world, Grisoft vigilantly assures
access to virus updates even during periods of extremely
high demand (e.g. when a major new virus attacks
occurs).
By
supporting several methods for updating systems,
including a fully automated update process, AVG
Anti- Virus makes it easy to keep virus definitions
current. The application can check for new updates
and download new files automatically; users can
also check for new updates manually.
AVG
ANTI-VIRUS SOLUTION FOR EVERY NEED
AVG
Anti-Virus software – available online and
through a network of thousands of resellers around
the world – includes solutions for individual
PCs, homes and small businesses, and large and small
company networks (even those without network file
servers). Grisoft also offers network versions for
file servers, e-mail servers, Linux, and Linux e-mail
servers. And AVG supports screen reader programs
for the visually impaired.
THE
LICENSING MODEL
The
licensing model for Grisoft solutions sets it apart
from its competitors. AVG Anti-Virus software is
sold with a 2-year license (vs. the 1-year license
offered by other antivirus companies), eliminating
the need to renew often. In addition, all registered
AVG users are eligible for discounted license renewal.
TECHNICAL
SUPPORT
Because
its focus is on antivirus protection, Grisoft takes
seriously its responsibility to insure maximum security
to customers and end users. Technical support via
email is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Grisoft AVG Authorized Resellers can also provide
technical assistance.
